my favorite thing is that patrick stump has patience for everybody in the world except for pete wentz
Randomly.
I really really like “My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light Em Up)” more and more for it’s place as the sort of comeback single. There is so much of that song that feels very… candidly threatening. The song is great on its own, but when taken as from the band to its fanbase and to the people affected by the band’s existence… godddd.
Like, my friend Sara sent me almost the entire FOB back catalog because she manages to be simultaneously completely generous and a complete asshole, and it’s sort of amazing from a…. fannish anthropologist POV so listen to these songs and go holy shit, this had an impact on fandom. Because It’s fucking obvious, from the fannish titling trends being severely influenced by FOB’s to the sort of chord of black comedy-sex-tragecomedy that I associate with certain periods in fandom.
So the portion of the song that goes
my songs know what you did in the dark
that reads instantly to me as
I was the soundtrack of your youth, and now I’m back to remind you why I am as much a part of you as anything else in your life.
Which is a delicious piece of emotional blackmail, to me.
There’s a lot of shit in the song that on surface reads as being the usual dark romance shit, but doubles fabulously as creator-transformative fanbase narrative.
You’re the antidote to everything except for me especially. The idea is not that everyone in a certain age group was a victim of the onslaught of FOB’s particular style and fan culture, but for those who were deeply influenced by it, it’s the sort of mark that doesn’t leave you. Everyone has grown older and wiser, but FOB is watching the bloom open and reach towards the sun while smirking and holding the watering pail.
So as a “btw we’re back motherfuckers” it’s not so much celebratory and bright in the way “Young Volcanoes” is, but its triumphant and cruel like a stiletto in the ribs that you want.
Someone said something along the lines of… the main narrative plot twist of Save Rock And Roll is that FOB isn’t saving rock and roll for the world, they’re saving it for themselves. I would add to that and say they are also saving it for the people who needed it before and, as FOB sees it, still need it now.
